Equality Ohio Education Fund Board

Jason H. Calhoun, a Columbus, Ohio attorney, formally held several positions with the State of Ohio in the workers’ compensation system over a period of twenty–five years as a Deputy Director of the Ohio Industrial Commission and the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. Jason is a past President of the Board of Trustees of the Columbus AIDS Task Force. Jason earned a bachelors degree from Yale University in Political Science and a law degree from the Michael Moritz School of Law at the Ohio State University.

Jason was born in Philadelphia, PA and in addition to Philadelphia has lived in Baghdad, Iraq; Rome, Italy; Djakarta, Indonesia; Nairobi, Kenya; Northfield, Massachusetts, and New Haven, Connecticut before taking up residence in Columbus, Ohio.

James Eller has lived in Cleveland Heights for 15 years. He attended Case Western Reserve University from which he graduated in 2000 with a Juris Doctorate and a Masters in Non-profit Management. Mr. Eller completed coursework to earn an MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management and is completing a Masters in Public Health from the University of Akron.

Over the course of his career to date, Mr. Eller has worked in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. Most notably his work has focused on entrepreneurial and development, including working with organizations such as University Circle Inc., ShoreBank Cleveland, and St Clair Superior Development Corp. on their strategic and master plans. Additionally, he led marketing and development of new segment opportunities for GOJO industries.

Currently, Mr. Eller is working on a national research public health project, which is attempting to enhance linkage to care for HIV positive inmates as they move from incarceration to release.

He has previously served on the Immigrant healthcare reform arm of UCCAN OH. His serves on the vestry at St Paul’s, which includes serving on the Church School board and being a member of the Village and the adoptive Families group. He also sits on the finance committee of Open Doors Academy, an after school enrichment program. He is on the planning and events committee for Plexus, the chamber of Commerce for the LGBT Community and Allies serving Northeast Ohio.

Jim Elliott is owner and president of Editorial Alliance, a company that develops educational materials in science and health for national textbook publishers. Jim was born in Columbus and has lived in central Ohio for most of his life. He graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After teaching school for a few years, most of his career has been in educational publishing. Jim has served on several nonprofit boards in Columbus. He lives in Bexley with his partner John Behal, an architect, and their dog, Joey.

Melanie K. Falls, LISW-S, LICDC is the Executive Director of Applewoods Centers, Inc. a Cuyahoga County based agency that provides community mental health and alternative educationfor children and families. Her training and experience include community mental health administration, family therapy and child welfare policy. Prior to working at Applewood Centers, Inc, she worked at Bellefaire JCB in Shaker Heights and she co–owned and operated a holistic private mental health practice in Kent, Ohio.

Melanie has done advocacy work in the LGBT community for over 20 years. She has presented workshops and lectured on diversity issues related to gay/lesbian/bisexual and transgendered individuals and their families in various venues such as: Northeast Ohio College of Medicine, University of Akron, NASW State and National Conference and social service agencies throughout Ohio. She has been a member of HRC and volunteered for their events. Melanie is an LISW and LICDC and has an MSSA from Case Western Reserve Univeristy. She and her partner, Tina, live in Walton Hills, Ohio and enjoy spending time with heir four children and three grandchildren.

Paul Feeney is a sales Account Executive at Oracle Corporation, a Fortune 500 software and computing systems company with a 100% score on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index. In 2005, he joined Sun Microsystems, which was acquired by Oracle in 2010. Prior to joining Sun, Paul was a 10-year veteran of various sales and technical positions at Sterling Commerce, a Dublin-based software subsidiary of AT&T. Prior serves on the Equality Ohio Development Committee and leads the Technology Committee. Before joining EO, he also served three years as the Board President of the Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus. Under Paul’s leadership the group implemented a strategic planning process, established a well-funded endowment, hired a full-time executive director, and transitioned from working to a governing board. Paul is also the Secretary of the Columbus chapter of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation Paul was born in Columbus and attended Thomas Worthington High School before going to school at Vanderbilt University. His Bachelor of Arts degree is in Molecular Biology with a minor in French. He currently lives in Columbus’ Arena District, where he is an avid hockey fan with his partner, Chad Braun, MD.

Jack Jackson was hired as Deputy Director in January 2005 to assist Director Sherri Geldin in guiding the Wexner Center’s strategic planning, administrative operations, fundraising, and public affairs initiatives. He provides direct leadership for the Center’s marketing, development, and patron service teams as well as all administrative departments, including finance, human resources, IT, and facility operations.

Prior to his appointment, Jack was vice president of the Columbus-based strategic communications firm Cochran Group Inc., where he provided strategic counsel for a diverse mix of non-profit, private, and public sector clients. From 1992 to 1998, he served as chief of staff at the Ohio Department of Education, developing and executing strategic plans, operating budgets, and policy positions. He also led department-wide transformation and organizational development initiatives, played a lead role in establishing and directing Ohio’s BEST (an education improvement coalition), managed stakeholder relations, and served as a policy liaison to the governor’s office. Prior to his work at the Department of Education, he served for six years as senior budget and management policy analyst at the Ohio Office of Budget and Management.

He serves as a board member for the Columbus Public Schools Foundation, the Neighborhood Schools Development Partnership (also for Columbus Public Schools) and the Short North Business Association.

Jackson has a B.A. in political science from Ohio Dominican University and a Master of Public Administration from The Ohio State University.

Samantha M. Quimby, is an Intellectual Property attorney with the law firm of Frost Brown Todd LLC and specializes in trademark, copyright and unfair competition. A native of Columbus, Ohio, she graduated magna cum laude from Kenyon College in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Sociology and Legal Studies. She went on to graduate from Capital University Law School with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 2003 and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Business and Taxation in 2006. While relatively new to the LGBT advocacy front, she has provided pro bono legal services on an as needed basis for non-profit arts organizations in the Central Ohio area, such as the Franklinton Arts District (FAD) where her brother served as past President and founder of FAD's Urban Scrawl event held annually in Dodge Park. She currently resides in the Victorian Village area of Columbus and is an avid college football fan.

Rev. Michael Schuenemeyer is the Executive for Health and Wholeness Advocacy and Minister for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns in the national offices of the United Church of Christ (UCC) based in Cleveland, OH. His leadership helped to pass the UCC’s General Synod resolution supporting marriage equality and creating the marriage equality DVD, Sacred Covenants, Faithful Conversations. He has helped to train welcoming church leaders in community-based organizing skills for building faith communities committed to justice, equality and inclusion. He served as Executive Producer for the film, Call Me Malcolm and is a member of the Steering Committee of the National Religious Leadership Roundtable. A native of Missouri, Mike received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Missouri – Kansas City and his Master of Divinity degree from Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, MO. He enjoys singing with the North Coast Men’s Chorus and lives in Cleveland, OH with his partner, Rowen.
Jeffrey J. Smith, CPA is a self-employed consultant providing accounting technology solutions to private sector companies and nonprofit organizations. Prior to starting his own business, Jeff worked as a consultant at Streff & Associates, Inc (1998-2001), an information management firm specializing in the implementation of financial software for small and midsize companies. From 1990-1997, Jeff served in a number of professional capacities, rising to Chief Financial Officer of the New Albany Investment Company (formerly Wexner Investment Company). Jeff has served on the HRC National Board of Governors as well as Co-Chaired and served as Treasurer of the Columbus HRC Dinner. Jeff also served as President of Reality Theatre. He was also the Alumni Board Treasurer and Chapter Counselor for the Ohio Gamma Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Currently, Jeff serves as President of the Short North Civic Association and has served as Treasurer. He is also on the board of the Short North Foundation.

Ron Templin, is a contracts administrator for Dublin, Ohio-based Cardinal Health, a Fortune 100 corporation that enjoys a 100 percent score on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index. Ron served on the steering committee that formed Cardinal Health’s first GLBT and Advocates Employee Resource Group (ERG) and is currently co-chair of the ERG’s Politics and Benefits Committee. Prior to joining Cardinal in 2000, he was an on-air talent, music director and operations manager for radio stations in Columbus and Groton/New London, Connecticut.

Ron was born in Kentucky and grew up in Columbus and Madison County, Ohio. A graduate of Jonathan Alder High School, he has two grown sons and three grandchildren. He is pursuing a degree in marketing at Columbus State Community College and lives in Columbus with his partner Bill LaFayette, an economist.

Julie VanDyne is an electrical engineer, and has been involved in the electric power industry since graduation in 1980 from Ohio University. She holds an MBA from Capital University in Columbus, and is a registered Professional Engineer in nine states, and is also currently registered nationally with the NCEES. Her career began in consulting, but includes over 14 years with American Electric Power, where she held a variety of positions. She re–entered the consulting world in 1995, and in late 1999, she founded her own company, IDC Engineering. She has a long history of involvement in the social arena, starting in 1974 as a crisis counselor in Akron Ohio. In the 80’s and 90’s, she became involved with the Allen County Aids Task force as a volunteer and board member. More recently, she’s taken part in several advocacy issues for the Transgender Community, and has just recently agreed to participate in the board of Equality Ohio.
