Ho-Lotta Bassoon and Dinah Blowyourhorn To Host Ohio State’s School of Music’s 4th Annual Moffett GLBT Scholarship Concert, Part 2
The 4th Annual Mark Moffett, Jr. GBLT Scholarship Concert, Part 2 will be Friday, March 5, 2010 at 8 p.m. in Weigel Auditorium, 1866 College Rd, on campus. The School of Music at Ohio State has the only GBLT music scholarship in the world. The event is being co-sponsored by Outlook Media.
The concert will be hosted by two new diva sensations who also happen to be musical: Ho-Lotta Bassoon and her step-sister, Dinah Blowyourhorn
Music faculty, students, staff, and alumni volunteer to perform in this scholarship concert, which honors New York pianist Mark Moffett, Jr., who passed away in 2005 at age 40 from brain cancer caused by HIV. Moffett’s partner Paul Lockwood, a staff member in the School of Music, coordinates the event.
The March 5 concert date recognizes Moffett’s March 7 birthday, and the program includes a variety of solos, chamber groups, and ensembles offered in a fast paced “collage” format, with no applause between performances. The program will include a diverse selection – from Chopin to Rufus Wainwright to favorites from muscal theatre. The concert typically draws 60 or more faculty, staff, and student performers.
A donation of $10 is suggested for event admission.
The $1,500 annual Moffett scholarship is awarded annually to a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender music major. Based on artistic ability and social service, the scholarship is awarded with first preference to a piano major, second to a violin major, and third to all other music majors.

New Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Students Opens at Kent State
On Thursday, March 11, Kent State University will open the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Student Center. Located on the second floor of the Kent Student Center, the LGBTQ Student Center will serve as the academic and social hub for the university’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students.
A grand opening event for the new center takes place March 11 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Room 204 of the Kent Student Center. It is free and open to the public. The opening reception will include tours of the center’s office; remarks from Kent State President Lester A. Lefton, Equality Ohio Executive Director Sue Doerfer and two Kent State students; and the presentation of the first Diversity Trailblazer Award to Professor Emeritus of English Delores L. Noll. The award will be presented by Kent State’s Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alfreda Brown with Lefton.
The new center will house the university’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies and offer varied services and resources to university students. The center will serve as a liaison between LGBTQ students and the administration and faculty. The office will also maintain a calendar of activities and events related to the LGBTQ community and coordinate programs with LGBTQ centers at other universities.
“The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Student Center represents a unique collaboration between the College of Arts and Sciences, the divisions of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Enrollment Management and Student Affairs at Kent State,” Brown said. “Several students have been asking for this type of center, and to provide support from the collaborations of three major units is to be commended.
“The new center will serve as a gathering place, offering a way for students to feel more connected at the university,” she continued. “The center will raise awareness of LGBTQ communities and cultures, promote inclusion of and safe spaces for LGBTQ at Kent State and in the community, and promote dialogues about sexuality, gender and race.”
Kent State’s history of supporting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender studies goes back almost 40 years when Noll became the first professor to teach a gay and lesbian issues course at Kent State in 1972. She also is a founding adviser to the Kent Gay Liberation Front, which is now called PRIDE! Kent, one of the oldest gay rights student organizations in the country.
In 2001, Kent State began offering the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies minor, becoming the first university in Ohio to do so. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies minor is designed to allow students to explore sexuality and sexual minorities from a variety of perspectives.
The LGBTQ Student Center is located in Room 226M in the Kent Student Center. It is staffed by volunteers from Kent State’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies faculty and directed by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies Co-Coordinators Molly Merryman from the Department of Justice Studies and Daniel Nadon from the School of Theatre and Dance.
For more information on the LGBTQ Student Center, call the center at 330-672-8008 or e-mail Merryman at mmerryma@kent.edu.

STATE REP DAN STEWART, EQUALITY OHIO’S SUE DOERFER TO SPEAK
Bill Sponsor and Executive Director to Stress Importance of HB 176 to Fight Discrimination Against Gays
OutLoud will host State Representative Dan Stewart and the Executive Director of Equality Ohio, Sue Doerfer, at the Stonewall Center on High to discuss the Equal Housing and Employment Act (HB 176) on March 13, 2010. Doors open at 11:00 am, speakers begin at 12:00 pm.
Currently, it is still legal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and/or gender identity in employment and housing decisions. Rep. Stewart sponsored HB 176, the Equal Housing and Employment Act, which passed in the House. Senator Dale Miller (D-Cleveland) has agreed to lead the effort to pass the bill in the Senate. Equality Ohio is working to ensure Senate President Bill Harris moves the bill into a committee where the bill will receive a full and fair hearing.
OutLoud was founded in 2010 to provide LGBTA community members a place to gather and discuss relevant topics, offer support for each other, and educate ourselves and others about issues surrounding the community and available resources. It is open every Saturday at the Stonewall Center, 1160 N. High St. Columbus, OH 43201, and is also available on the web at www.outloudcolumbus.com.

If you have a gay child, family members or friend, you are not alone. We invite you to attend our confidential, monthly support meetings where you can obtain information about your loved one’s sexual orientation while dealing with your own feelings in a warm, confidential and supportive atmosphere.
By meeting gay people, parents and family members come to realize that homosexuality is found in every ethnic and socioeconomic group. Even more importantly, they learn that stereotypical views of homosexuality have no place or validity with this group that represents a significant percentage of the world’s population.
Meetings are loosely structured and new participants are not obligated to share or speak. Just listening and attending can be a learning experience.

Please make your plans to attend Ohio’s premier educational event addressing issues of equity, opportunity, diversity and inclusion. “The State-of-the-State”, our 14th annual conference, returns to Toledo, Ohio and features an all-star line up of presentations and panels addressing critical diversity topics. We’re especially pleased to announce that our keynote speaker will be TyKiah Wright, founder and Executive Director of WrightChoice, Inc. Ms. Wright is dedicated to showing the importance of embracing diversity in the workplace. A gifted motivational speaker with an inspiring personal story, Ms. Wright has worked with a variety of state and national organizations and corporations assisting them in finding meaningful opportunities for persons with disabilities. Ms. Wright is a member of OSU’s Fisher College of Business Diversity Advisory Committee and the Human Resource Association of Central Ohio. A Commissioner for the City of Columbus Community Relations Commission, Ms. Wright is a recent recipient of the prestigious Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award presented by the American Association of People with Disabilities. In 2006, she was featured in Ebony Magazine as one of the “30 leaders under 30”.
Ms. Wright is only one of our outstanding presenters this year. I am attaching our conference registration brochure that also provides a listing of our concurrent sessions. You do not want to miss out on this exceptional educational opportunity. Visit our website at for more details, and to take advantage of our online registration. This is also a wonderful opportunity for your organization to demonstrate its support for diversity by becoming a conference sponsor. All sponsorship levels include conference registrations as well as several other rewarding benefits.
We are continuing to offer this outstanding conference for the low registration fee of $125.00. This is a truly outstanding bargain, especially given the number and quality of presenters and sessions that we offer. In a time of budget shortfalls, we believe this low cost, high quality educational event continues to present conferees with an affordable opportunity to stay abreast of the critical challenges involving equity, opportunity and diversity. If you know of other individuals who might benefit from participating at our conference, please share this information with them. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you on March 25h. MR
