Illinois moves marriage equality forward: one step at a time.
Illinois Equality Illinois activists have a history of passing inclusive laws that fully reflect and protect all the residents of Illinois. Over the years, they have been building a strong foundation for equality for all Illinois residents. Illinois has a non discrimination statute in place that protects LGBT private sector employees. The Illinois hate crimes act protects against violent acts perpetrated on the basis of sexual orientation bias. In Illinois, civil unions are legal and same sex marriages and civil unions from other jurisdictions are legally recognized. What next? Marriage Equality, of course!
After working hard on the language and sponsorship of the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, a tactical decision was made to push marriage equality forward during the Illinois lame duck session. Marriage Equality was added as a Senate amendment to HB4963, a bill dealing with automobile rentals and the Collateral Recovery Act. In a vote along party lines, the bill passed the Illinois Senate Executive Committee and goes to the floor for a full vote. We don't yet know the timing of the vote, but it is expected to pass the Illinois Senate. More of an uphill battle is expected in the Illinois House of Representatives. We will keep you posted.
