After posting, we learned from Robert McClain that while we were drafting our response with the other signatories that the sign has been taken down. 

Residents of Brunswick and drivers along I-71 have repeatedly been exposed to a hateful, homophobic message in the last couple of years. Southwest Baptist Church owns and operates a billboard along the interstate. They rotate messaging throughout the year. A regular message the church promotes is “homosexuality is a sin, but Christ can set you free.” Once again, this sign is being displayed.

Equality Ohio joined the Utah Pride Center, Campaign for Southern Equality, and twenty-five other organizations in filing an amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court. The brief urges the justices to strike down a wide range of anti-gay laws. The brief calls on the Court to issue a ruling fair to our community.

Today’s filing concludes: “Because the Constitution neither knows nor tolerates classes among its citizens, gay Americans must be treated equally under the law – everywhere. This Court should affirm the fundamental rights of gay Americans and adopt heightened scrutiny to review laws targeting gay people. The best way to stop discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is for this Court to stop de jure discrimination against gay Americans.”

Today, Equality Ohio joined with the Human Rights Campaign and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to announce the start of a new statewide coalition. Ohioans share some pretty basic values. We believe everyone should be free to live without fear of discrimination at home, at work and in their community. We believe all students should be free to go to school without the threat of harassment or violence. And we believe all loving couples, including same-sex couples, should have the freedom to marry the person they love, including loving, living and marrying right here in the Buckeye State.
